A general approach to Women’s safety and hygiene is not suitable at all. The universal approach for constructing women toilets does not exist in sync with female needs. Special care is supposed to be taken in providing the right place for women to find comfort in public places. The designing and facilitating of the toilets for women need to have proper water and soap facility and to dispose or clean the sanitary pads too.
Accompanying the mother come the needs of the child too, and to provide baby-friendly stations is also very necessary. Taking these into consideration, the Hyderabad City has come up with special ‘She Toilets’. They are free to use and exclusively for women.
The inconveniences women, if faced in a public place, can now be addressed easily within their reach in the city premises. The Chandanagar of the city of Hyderabad has got these facilities now near three of their shops. The construction and the funding come from Hindustan Aeronautical Limited.
The HAL has it under their Corporate Social Responsibility Project of ‘She Mart and loo’. The Self-help groups of the Chandanagar west-zone circle of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) were in partnership with HAL in executing this project.
GHMC Zonal Commissioner named, Harichandana Dasari talking to the press and the media about this has said, ” Though there are pay toilets in the city which can be used by women, the civic body observed that the facilities are not being extensively used as they are manned by men“.
And these manned toilets do not invite the female ones in need as comfortable as a female would. They are also coin based paid toilets. So in order to address this situation, these She Toilets are made to be monitored by women only.
The commissioner also says, ” Women most often hesitate to use a public toilet as mostly there will be men sitting there to collect user fees. Also, hygiene is a factor. This outlet will have four women running the mart making it safe for women to use”.
