The ICC World Cup is a very anxious and prestigious match for every cricketer and a cricket fan. In the match’s 2011 final, India against Sri Lanka was a very special moment for every Indian cricket team fan. It was the moment when MS Dhoni & Co had defeated their opponents and claiming the second World Cup title for the country in decades.
At 274/6, Sri Lanka batted first. Now India had to cope with the runs. Unfortunately, we lost the wickets of Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar very early than expected. And, thanks to Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli India was able to keep steady the innings. Just when Kohli lost his wicket, Dhoni decided to promote himself ahead of Yuvraj Singh. He handled it well and had sealed the match with a 109/4.
Promoting himself or going to bat before his fixed position, Dhoni shocked many. It was Yuvraj’s turn and he is in a great form, at that time could have handled it well. But, Dhoni went ahead and did us good with the runs. After about seven to eight years after the situation, Dhoni has now revealed the reason for his decision.
In his words, “I knew most of the bowlers of Sri Lanka as they were part of the Chennai Super Kings earlier. I promoted myself because Muralitharan was bowling at that time. I have played him a lot in the CSK nets and I was confident that I will be able to score runs freely against him. That was one of the main reasons why I pushed myself up the order during the final”.
All these revelations were during an Interview session for the launch of MS Dhoni Residential Cricket Academy in Dongargaon. He thanked all the ones who supported him and his success in the field. His success paved way for many wicketkeepers to be evenly considered along with their other teammates by the selectors.
Change from then
Giving us insights on the selectors’ mind, he said, “Before me, selectors were quite reluctant to make stumper as captain saying he will be burdened too much. But I changed their view with my successful tenure as the captain. ‘Keeper is in the best position to help any captain analyse the match. He is very close to the action and can accordingly guide the team leader about many things. He is an asset for any captain. He can release the burden on the captain with his inputs”.
This man truly has a lot of cricket and a lot of passion filled.
