Brain Dead Woman’s Organs Donated, Gave A Second Chance To 5 Lives

Organ donation is a noble thing to do after the person expires. Providing for another lease for life to others after the person has left the world, is such a thankful act. In a recent event in the state of Maharashtra, a 51-year-old brain-dead woman from Kandivli gave a second chance to not one but five other patients. The family members of the lady were kind enough to agree for donating her organs after her demise.


The five patients who received the organs of the lady were all on the verge of serious organ related failures. They were all the cases of End-Stage Organ Failure, who needed immediate organ replacements for survival. This multiple organ donation is now the 52nd Organ donation in the city.

The serial number is 52 but the number of organs donated was a record of 136 in the city by the families of brain-dead patients. in this latest case, the donor was a housewife who was admitted to the nearby nursing home after she collapsed suddenly at her home.

Doctors there suggested for a CT Scan, and other related and required tests. Further investigations into the case of the woman were taken up. This revealed that the woman was attacked by a stroke and requested the family to shift her to a more sophisticated Tertiary Care Facility.

As a response to this, her family members soon shifted her to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri. The transplant coordinator, Rekha Barot on examining the woman says, “The woman had no comorbidities such as hypertension or diabetes which could lead to the stroke”.

The woman when she was brought to the hospital did not show any basic brain activity. Tests were conducted which record the brain activity, eye movements, heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, body movement and other functions. The tests then confirmed that she was brain-dead.

Heart, Liver, Kidneys, Cornea and Skin were donated. Out of which the heart, partial liver and one kidney were used for patients suffering from organ failure. Another kidney was transplanted to a 5-year-old paediatric patient. Even after her death, she saved the lives of 5 other people.
